Under the spotlight today: The Ridgefield Chorale
An interview with Laurie Bradbury, The Ridgefield Chorale
How do you brighten our community?
The Ridgefield Chorale brightens our community by bringing the joy of singing to a broader audience, as music enriches the lives of all who are touched by it. We are committed to offering accessible, high quality musical entertainment with reasonable ticket pricing, especially for seniors and families.
In addition to our spring and fall concerts, and holiday concert, the Chorale performs at many Ridgefield town and community events, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the Ridgefield Playhouse, 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, Thanksgiving Interfaith, and others. We model the joy and positivity of working and playing with our neighbors.
Who do you serve in our community?
The Chorale strives through our concerts and community activities to help people of all ages, from young children to adults to seniors, develop a love of music and the arts, and learn how music can create lasting positive experiences.
In addition to a love of music, the common bond that connects the singers is a sense of camaraderie and civic mindedness. Members volunteer their time not only to blend in four-part harmony but also to help our neighbors. We participate in community activities that impact the lives of children, seniors, and students in a positive way.
What are you most proud of?
The Chorale was founded in Ridgefield in 1976. This year, we celebrate our 50th anniversary bringing the joy of music to the Town of Ridgefield. It is vital for a community like Ridgefield to have a strong presence of the arts, and we are proud to have played this role in Ridgefield for the last 50 years. The Chorale has been led since 1998 by our amazing Artistic Director and Conductor, Daniela Sikora.
What was the spark that started your organization?
The 1976 United States Bicentennial was the spark that created The Ridgefield Chorale! And this year we celebrate our 50th anniversary.
What happened in 1976? Ridgefield's Bicentennial Committee wanted to produce musical events to coincide with the Bicentennial. The committee enlisted Ernestine Holmes, organist and choir director at Ridgefield's First Congregational Church, to be the director of a community choir made up of members of local church and temple choirs and others who liked to sing, including several Ridgefield High School students.
The Ridgefield Community Chorale performed at the Colonial Common Days and the Fourth of July ceremonies. Singers enjoyed the experience so much, they decided to create a new choir for Ridgefield. The Ridgefield Chorale was incorporated on August 25, 1976 and held their first concert in September 1976 at First Congregational Church. The rest is history!
