Community Connections shines a light on local charities whose compassion, service, and dedication strengthen the fabric of our community. By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire others and help the spirit of giving spread throughout our towns.

An interview with Lisa Scails, Executive Director, Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut
How do you brighten our community?
Every mural, gallery night, and downtown festival you enjoy in Greater Danbury likely has us working quietly behind it, by promoting, connecting the artists, funders, and towns that make it happen. We turn scattered creative energy into things you can actually walk into and experience.
Who do you serve in our community?
Anyone who's ever caught a concert, visited a museum, or noticed a new mural has been touched by our work, even if they've never heard of us. We serve the creatives who make the culture and the towns, families, and businesses who get to enjoy it.
What are you most proud of?
We are proud of helping build the future of arts and culture in Greater Danbury. From advancing cultural districts and public art to exploring a regional Arts Hub and strengthening partnerships across the region, we're helping create a community where creativity, opportunity, and connection can thrive.
What was the spark that started your organization?
The Cultural Alliance grew from a grassroots effort to unite and strengthen the region's arts and cultural community. Local leaders recognized that the creative sector needed a shared voice, stronger connections, and greater visibility to thrive.
What is one of your future impact goals?
We want more towns in our region to have a real, walkable arts district — the kind of place where you stumble onto a gallery opening or a mural and think, "I didn't know we had this here." That takes years of relationship-building most people never see.
How did you change a life?
A young person gains confidence through the arts. An artist builds a sustainable career. A nonprofit finds the support it needs to grow. The local economy is boosted through arts and culture. We create pathways to creativity, connection, opportunity, and belonging that strengthen both individual lives and communities.
Who are your community partners?
We believe stronger communities are built through collaboration. That is why we work across sectors with organizations such as the Connecticut Office of the Arts, municipalities, schools, businesses, planners, downtown leaders, and cultural organizations to advance projects that no single organization could accomplish alone.
