Under the spotlight today: Meals on Wheels of Ridgefield
An interview with Dean Miller, Meals on Wheels of Ridgefield
How do you brighten our community?
All of our meals are freshly prepared by our team and are both delicious and nutritious — but we offer much more than food. Every delivery includes a friendly check‑in and a cheerful conversation with one of our volunteer drivers, helping clients feel connected and cared for. We also brighten days with decorated lunch bags, birthday gift bags, and seasonal surprises throughout the year, many of which are donated or handmade by local families, businesses, schools, and civic groups. These thoughtful touches mean so much to our clients and truly lift their spirits.
Who do you serve in our community?
We are happy to serve any Ridgefield resident who is unable to prepare their own meals due to age, disability, or illness. Support can be arranged for long‑term needs or short‑term recovery, and there are no age or income restrictions. If someone needs help, we’re here.
What are you most proud of?
With only five part‑time employees and more than 175 volunteers, we prepare, package, and deliver over 60,000 home-cooked meals each year. Our dedicated team keeps our program running smoothly and helps us maintain low operating costs. We receive no federal or state funding, and because our meals are provided free of charge, we rely entirely on the generosity of our community — something we are deeply proud and grateful for.

How did you change a life?
Along with compliments about our meals, we regularly receive heartfelt notes from clients and their families about the difference our program has made. Many share the same sentiment: “I don’t know what I would do without Meals on Wheels.” Knowing that we can ease someone’s burden and bring comfort during a challenging time is the reason we do this work, and we are grateful to serve our neighbors in need.

Daily Bread Food Pantry
Daily Bread was started in 1984. However, we recognized that the Greater Danbury area needed to be served by a much more dignified and inclusive food pantry. Accordingly, just over a year ago, we opened a state-of-the-art new facility that incorporates the latest thinking in modern food pantries.
