An interview with Dotsy Torres, Senior Director of Education, Jericho Partnership, Inc.
How do you brighten our community?
Jericho Partnership brightens our community by ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed, regardless of their circumstances. We provide year-round educational and enrichment programs that help students build academic skills, develop confidence, and form positive relationships with caring adult mentors.
Our impact extends beyond the classroom. We serve thousands of nutritious meals and snacks each year, distribute weekend food bags so children have enough to eat when school is out, provide backpacks filled with school supplies, and operate a weekly food pantry that supports families facing food insecurity. These services help meet immediate needs while allowing children to focus on learning and reaching their potential.
We also strengthen our community by giving families hope and support. Through affordable after-school and summer programs, parents know their children are in a safe, nurturing environment while they work. By partnering with schools, churches, businesses, and community organizations, we maximize resources and create opportunities that no single organization could provide alone.
At Jericho Partnership, we believe brighter futures begin with investing in children. Every meal served, every homework assignment completed, every encouraging conversation, and every family supported helps create a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant Danbury for everyone.
Who do you serve in our community?
Jericho Partnership serves children, youth, and families throughout the Greater Danbury community, with a special focus on those facing economic hardship and other barriers to success. Our year-round programs support students from kindergarten through high school by providing academic assistance, mentoring, nutritious meals, enrichment activities, and a safe place to learn and grow outside of school hours.
We work closely with local schools and community partners to identify students who can benefit most from our services, including children from low-income households, working families in need of affordable care, English language learners, and students who are at risk of falling behind academically or socially.
Our support extends beyond students to their families. Through our weekly food pantry, backpack and school supply distributions, weekend food programs, and connections to community resources, we help families meet basic needs while creating opportunities for long-term success.
By investing in children and strengthening families, Jericho Partnership helps build a healthier, more resilient community where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
What are you most proud of?
What makes us most proud is the lasting impact we have on the lives of children and families in our community. Every day, we see students who arrive needing academic support, encouragement, or simply a safe place to belong, and we have the privilege of helping them discover their potential.
We are proud that Jericho Partnership has grown to serve hundreds of students each year through our after-school and summer learning programs while also providing critical resources such as nutritious meals, weekend food bags, school supplies, and access to our weekly food pantry. As our programs have expanded, our commitment has remained the same: ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.
Perhaps our greatest source of pride is the trust families place in us. Parents know their children are cared for, encouraged, and challenged to become the best version of themselves. Success is measured not only by improved grades or attendance, but by the confidence a child gains, the friendships they build, and the hope they carry into the future.
We are proud to be a trusted partner in building a stronger Danbury—one child, one family, and one opportunity at a time.
What was the spark that started your organization?
Jericho Partnership was founded by William Beattie, whose passion for serving children and families inspired the organization more than three decades ago. Bill recognized that many young people in the Greater Danbury community faced significant barriers to success—not because they lacked potential, but because they lacked access to opportunities, support, and caring adults who believed in them.
What began as a simple desire to help children succeed has grown into a year-round organization serving hundreds of students and families through educational programs, mentoring, nutritious meals, food assistance, and family support services. Bill's vision was never just about helping children academically; it was about caring for the whole child and strengthening the entire family.
That same spark continues to guide Jericho Partnership today. We believe every child deserves a safe place to learn, trusted mentors, and the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances. Every program we offer reflects Bill Beattie's original vision: that investing in children transforms lives, strengthens families, and creates a brighter future for our entire community. More than 30 years later, that vision remains at the heart of everything we do.
What is one of your future impact goals?
One of Jericho Partnership's primary goals for the future is to ensure that every child in the Greater Danbury community who needs our services has access to them. As the need for affordable, high-quality academic support and youth development continues to grow, we are committed to expanding our programs while maintaining the personal attention and high standards that define our work.
We envision reaching more students through additional after-school and summer learning opportunities, strengthening partnerships with schools and community organizations, and expanding access to nutritious meals and family support services. By continuing to invest in children's academic success, social-emotional development, and overall well-being, we hope to break cycles of poverty and create lasting opportunities for future generations.
Our ultimate goal is not simply to serve more children—it is to equip every child we serve with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to graduate from high school, pursue higher education or meaningful careers, and become engaged, productive members of the community. We believe that when children thrive, families grow stronger, and our entire community benefits.
How did you change a life?
One of the most meaningful ways we change lives is by helping children discover their own potential. We have seen students enter our programs struggling academically, lacking confidence, or facing difficult circumstances at home. Through consistent academic support, caring mentors, nutritious meals, and a safe, encouraging environment, those same students begin to believe in themselves and achieve things they once thought were impossible.
One student came to Jericho several years behind academically and often doubted his ability to succeed. With daily encouragement, individualized support, and adults who refused to give up on him, his confidence grew alongside his academic skills. Today, he is succeeding in school, setting goals for his future, and serving as a positive role model for younger students.
Stories like his remind us that changing a life is often the result of showing up every day with patience, compassion, and high expectations. While every child's journey is unique, the common thread is that when a young person knows someone believes in them, they begin to believe in themselves. That transformation creates a ripple effect that strengthens families, schools, and our entire community.
Who are your community partners?
Jericho Partnership is grateful to collaborate with a wide network of community partners who help us expand our impact and better serve children and families throughout the Greater Danbury community. Our partnerships include Danbury Public Schools, local churches, businesses, civic organizations, foundations, and nonprofit agencies that share our commitment to helping young people succeed.
These collaborations provide critical resources such as nutritious meals, educational materials, volunteers, mentoring, financial support, food assistance, and enrichment opportunities. We also work closely with organizations that support the health and well-being of families by connecting them with additional community services when needed.
Our partners play an essential role in making our programs possible. Whether they provide funding, donate supplies, sponsor field trips, volunteer their time, or help connect families to resources, they are an extension of our mission. Together, we are creating a stronger network of support that allows children to thrive academically, socially, physically, and emotionally.
Jericho Partnership believes that lasting community change happens through collaboration. By working together with organizations and individuals who share our vision, we are building brighter futures for the children and families of Greater Danbury.
