Community Connections

Community Connections shines a light on local charities whose compassion, service, and dedication strengthen the fabric of our community. By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire others and help the spirit of giving spread throughout our towns.

Under the spotlight today: Housatonic Habitat for Humanity

An interview with Cindy Sherman, Habitat Housatonic for Humanity

How do you brighten our community?

We brighten our community by creating pathways to safe, affordable homeownership and by helping families stay safely in the homes they already have. From building new homes to providing critical safety repairs for seniors and veterans, we focus on stability, dignity, and long-term impact. Every volunteer, sponsor, and homeowner partnership helps turn hope into something tangible.

Who do you serve in our community?

We serve hardworking individuals and families in need of affordable housing opportunities, as well as low-income seniors and veterans who require critical home safety repairs to age in place. In addition to housing, we provide financial literacy education and workshops to help families build long-term stability and confidence. Our goal is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to a safe, stable place to call home and the knowledge to sustain it.

What are you most proud of?

We are most proud of the families who partner with us and achieve homeownership, often after overcoming significant challenges. Watching children grow up in stable homes, seeing seniors remain safely in place, and witnessing volunteers come together for a common purpose reminds us why this work matters. The ripple effect of safe housing strengthens entire neighborhoods.

Who are your community partners?

Our work is powered by local banks, businesses, civic groups, social service agencies, volunteers, and generous sponsors. We also operate the Danbury ReStore, our thrift shop and donation center, where every donation and purchase made by the community directly funds affordable housing and critical home repairs locally.

Daily Bread Food Pantry

Daily Bread was started in 1984. However, we recognized that the Greater Danbury area needed to be served by a much more dignified and inclusive food pantry. Accordingly, just over a year ago, we opened a state-of-the-art new facility that incorporates the latest thinking in modern food pantries.
