Community Connections

Community Connections shines a light on local charities whose compassion, service, and dedication strengthen the fabric of our community. By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire others and help the spirit of giving spread throughout our towns.

Under the spotlight today: Hillside Food Outreach

An interview with Kathleen Purdy, CEO and Founder, Hillside Food Outreach

How do you brighten our community?

We home deliver healthy Nutritious, Medically diet related food to those who cannot, for whatever reason, access local pantries. We also deliver to those who can access pantries, but when they get there, they find that, due to their illness and/or medication, there is nothing they can eat.

Who do you serve in our community?

Over 425 volunteers home deliver to the same Client each delivery, and they get to know them, many times become friends, and can and have helped in situations that no one else is aware of due to isolation. Many have had them over for dinner and done special things on their birthdays.

What are you most proud of?

The love and caring commitment of our volunteers and the fact that we help our clients live better, healthier lives. We don't just hand them a bag of unhealthy, processed foods to fill their stomach, but healthy, nutrition-related food related to their illnesses to help them lead healthier lives. Everyone deserves the chance to eat healthy.

What was the spark that started your organization?

What is one of your future impact goals?

How did you change a life?

We change many lives by getting our clients the food they need related to their health issues, and for those who do not have health issues, we help to prevent them by bringing them healthy, nutritious foods. And we have heard from many moms that they appreciate the healthier choices, as they can teach their children to eat better.

Who are your community partners?

We receive referrals from many local community agencies of people who cannot access pantries and therefore often go without food to eat or food that is related to and a help for their medical illnesses.
