Under the spotlight today: Community Fostered

An interview with Heather Mindich, Community Fostered

How do you brighten our community?

Over the past 5 years, Community Fostered has nurtured a partnership between the social workers in the Danbury DCF office and members of our community. We have become a steady resource for the social workers to help children in foster and kinship care get the essential items they need such as clothing, car seats, beds & bedding, toiletries, food, back to school supplies and more.

Additionally, each year we fulfill over 300 individual holiday wishes for the children in DCF’s care. Our members are able to shop for exactly what a child is wishing for that year.

Who do you serve in our community?

Community Fostered serves the children in our area who are in either foster or kinship care through the Danbury Department of Children and Family.

What are you most proud of?

We are most proud of the fact that we have established ourselves as the go to reliable resource for social workers to contact when kids are in need. But, also hearing the stories of how we make Christmas magical for the children, social workers and the families is a close second

What was the spark that started your organization?

Community Fostered was born from seeing a clear and urgent need in our community. After Covid, a group that was previously able to help the social workers ceased to exist.  Social workers were doing incredible work, but too often they didn’t have access to the resources the children and families needed most; especially during high stress situations and the holidays. I felt compelled to bridge that gap.  We began as a simple effort to provide holiday wishes to kids and have grown into a group dedicated to supporting the social workers and children all year long, bringing comfort, dignity and moments of joy to children and families navigating some of life’s toughest circumstances.

What is one of your future impact goals?

We want all of the children supported by this office to know that there are people in their community that love and care about them. We aim to provide the children with safe car seats, comfortable beds to sleep in and warm clothes that are all their own.

How did you change a life?

Community Fostered was able to provide some wearable adaptive tech to child with disabilities who was aging out of their care that would make it easier for them to live on their own.

Who are your community partners?

Our partners in the community are Fairfield County Bank, Fletchers Storage, and Ridgefield Parks and Recreation.
