Community Connections

Community Connections shines a light on local charities whose compassion, service, and dedication strengthen the fabric of our community. By sharing their stories, we hope to inspire others and help the spirit of giving spread throughout our towns.

Under the spotlight today: Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary

An interview with Laura King, Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary

How do you brighten our community?

Honoring the bond between caregivers and their pets, the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary's Senior Paw Project provides critically needed pet food, veterinary care assistance and foster/respite care to senior pet guardians struggling to keep or care for their animals.

Who do you serve in our community?

CVHAS Senior Paw Project serves 420 pets of older adults, throughout Fairfield County and the state of CT.

What are you most proud of?

Caring for the pets of older adults, eliminating the difficult decision to have to surrender their pet to a shelter due to financial constraints to properly care for their beloved furry family member. By ensuring the pet has a standard wellness veterinary care visit annually and receives adequate pet food, the pet is healthier and their pet owner may focus on nutrition and care needs for themselves.

What was the spark that started your organization?

The Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation is a Connecticut-based nonprofit organization working to promote compassion and healing through human-animal connection. The foundation was started in 2013 to commemorate and honor the life of Catherine Violet Hubbard, a six-year-old victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy and passionate animal lover.

What is one of your future impact goals?

To offer the Senior Paw Project to a greater number of low income older adult communities throughout CT, keeping their beloved pet in their loving home.

How did you change a life?

Every older adult and pet within our program is well cared for, both emotionally eliminating the worry of taking care of their pet properly and ensuring their pet is healthy and remains in their loving home.

Who are your community partners?

Elderly Housing Management, Pootatuck Watershed Association, Newtown Community Center, Newtown Parks & Recreation
