Under the spotlight today: Ann's Place
An interview with Shannon Cobb, President and CEO, Ann's Place
How do you brighten our community?
When people are diagnosed with cancer, they are in a really dark and scary place. Ann’s Place surrounds them, and their loved ones, with help and hope. Our clinical social workers, facilitators and wellness experts provide a host of services aimed at improving quality of life during and after cancer. We assist them to create a unique pathway through cancer to improve quality of life. At Ann's Place, all are welcome and all services are provided free of charge.
Who do you serve in our community?
We serve anyone in CT and NY who is struggling while facing cancer or who has a loved one facing cancer. Our services are provided in-person and online so even people who are bedridden or not feeling well can attend our programs.
What are you most proud of?
We now have over 30 support groups meeting the needs of people at every stage of cancer and in life. Because discussing complex emotions and anxiety is very difficult, we offer services in English, Spanish and Portuguese so people can receive care in a language that is comfortable for them. Last year we provided over 10,000 services to 1,014 people. We are very grateful to the 800 volunteers and 3000 donors who made this possible. Ann's Place is truly a community led organization.

How did you change a life?
We help so many people get through some of their most difficult days. One of our clients received art therapy as he faced stage four cancer. The art he made represented his after-life and he hung it in the hospital room on his last days which gave him great comfort. At a very different stage of life, our young adult support group has become very close as they deal with issues that other clients may not understand. They have been instrumental in supporting each other as they navigate parenting, dating and work-life balance.
