An interview with A.C.T. (A Contemporary Theatre) of Connecticut

How do you brighten our community?

We brighten our community by creating a place where people "feel" something real. At A.C.T. of CT, that might mean a Broadway-caliber production, a sensory-friendly performance where every family feels welcome, or a student stepping onstage for the first time and discovering their voice. We don’t just produce shows—we create shared experiences. When a theater becomes a gathering place for conversation, inspiration, and connection, it adds light. That’s what we strive to do every single day.

Who do you serve in our community?

We serve the entire community: families, students, seniors, lifelong theater lovers, and people walking into a theater for the first time. Through our professional productions, youth programs, Broadway Unplugged concerts, and accessibility initiatives, we work to remove barriers and open doors. Whether someone is attending a show, taking a class, volunteering, or coming to a sensory-friendly matinee, they belong here. Our mission is rooted in inclusion. Theater has the power to reflect a community back to itself—and everyone deserves to see themselves in that reflection.

What are you most proud of?

We are most proud that a small professional regional theater in Ridgefield has earned national recognition. From reimagined productions like Fiddler on the Roof to developing new, licensable versions of shows in collaboration with major artists, we’ve proven that important creative work can happen right here. But beyond the accolades, we are proud of the culture we’ve built: artists who feel supported, young people who feel inspired, and audiences who trust us enough to come back again and again. That trust means everything.

Who are your community partners?

We’re fortunate to collaborate with an incredible network of community partners who help extend our impact beyond our stage. That includes local schools and educators, our Sensory Friendly organizations like SPHERE, Ridgefield Special Olympics, Ridgebury Farm, and Our Vision, as well as fellow arts institutions and nonprofits throughout Ridgefield and the region. We also partner with community leaders, local businesses, and service organizations who believe in the value of the arts. These relationships aren’t transactional: they’re built on shared purpose. Together, we create opportunities that make our community more connected, inclusive, and vibrant.
